Calliope rest area, Qld

These photos depict one of the most attractive rest areas we have come across. Rest areas are places where travellers can pull of the highway and they where can stay overnight for no charge. They generally have toilet facilities and are often modest resting places. Calliope rest area however is a local attraction where people come to camp for the weekend and water skii on the river.

We arrived at mid-day on Sunday and the rest area was chock a block with vehicles of all descriptions. By mid-afternoon the locals had left, leaving only the true travellers. Maximum stay here is 48 hours.

Across the river is the historic Calliope village where there is a arts and craft market of high standard held every second Sunday of the month. Unfortunately we were unlucky enough to be visiting on the in-between Sunday.
